Saprahan: Eating Tradition In Sambas, West Kalimantan

Saprahan is tradition that be queath and this event is celebrated for giving thanks to Allah SWT. The meaning of Saprahan comes from word “sap” means in arrow. This event is usually done by Malaynese in West Kalimantan, like in Sambas, Mempawah, and Pontianak City in wedding party and celebrating something. People serve Saprahan by spreading out the white fabric on the floor and people use some trays as a place for a dish that will be served.

Saprahan is held for the guests who attend that event. The guests will make a group of 5-6 people by sitting on the floor. Then the guests pray that guided by the leader of Saprahan. And the guests are allowed to eat the dishes is served, like as food of meat and sometimes bean curd and chili cookes in fat. In this event, the guests can not refuse Saprahan because Saprahan is way to respect the guests and to make a good relationship.
My arrival at the beginning of the month of Sha'ban and until today, there is a tradition of eating that always makes me salute as though less troublesome than how to eat buffet, this tradition is well guarded. Its name Saprahan or local people called it "Nyaprah". This is a habit Saprahan Sambas communities in facing food menu in front of him.

This tradition used at any event involving food as the main event, for example Sya'banan, Open Fasting Together, even at weddings. Not just a meal, not just get together, there are many things that need to be considered in the tradition nyaprah.

First: There must be 6 or a maximum of 6 people who are members of a group. If more, then the last person to come had to wait until the six collected again. Figures 6 here symbolizing the number of the pillars of faith that must be believed to be Muslims, that there were 6 cases.
Second: dishes that exist in saprahan of five kinds, is a marker consists of five pillars of Islam.
Third: two scoops are used to take a side dish is a symbol of the two sentences creed.

Guests arriving “bersaprah” will usually carry some kind of a basket of plastic containers used to carry rice for the owner of the event. The return as a side dish that is still left over, these containers are also used to wrap the rest saprahan still edible to not wasted. People in the group will usually agree to share the rest. Do not ask what they feel disgusted, did not seem altogether. The strength of kinship that exists among the citizens seem able to counteract it. That Saprahan, full dining tradition Sambas community-style philosophy.

Let bersaprah, let us encourage ukhuwah!
